Senior Research Fellowship opportunity at Queens'. https://lnkd.in/eSFwH55JApplications are invited for a Visiting Senior Research Fellowship at Queens’ College, Cambridge (UK) for the academic year 2024/25. The College seeks to appoint a Visiting Senior Research Fellow with a current academic appointment or equivalent from a background that is currently underrepresented on the College’s fellowship and in UK Higher Education more generally. Applications would be particularly welcome from those from the Global Majority, including people who are Black, Asian, Brown, or dual-heritage, and Indigenous people, people from the global south, and people from small island nations.Queens’ is fortunate in being able to offer this Visiting Senior Research Fellowship for the first time. This limited-term appointment would allow the successful candidate to carry out a specific research project, free of other commitments. It would be ideally suited to someone wanting to spend a sabbatical engaged in research in the University of Cambridge or a recognised research establishment in Cambridge. The tenure is for up to a year and cannot be extended. The successful candidate would be expected to conduct their own research, to engage with other scholars within the College and Cambridge more generally, to build up connections that benefit their own careers and institutions, and enrich life in Queens’ by broadening our own perspectives.

This marks a notable positive change. It's certainly a cause for celebration within the scientific community, but is it enough? I would argue it's not."Postgraduate students and postdoctoral researchers have beenadvocating for higher payfor the past two years through a campaign called Support Our Science. They requested an increase in the value, and number, of federal government scholarships, and got more than they asked for. Stipends for master’s students will rise from Can$17,500 (US$12,700) to $27,000 per year, PhDs stipends that ranged from $20,000 to $35,000 will be set to a uniform annual $40,000 and most postdoctoral-fellowship salaries will increase from $45,000 to $70,000 per annum. The number of scholarships and fellowships provided will also rise over time, building to around 1,720 more per year after five years."https://lnkd.in/g9dbursC

Hi, everyone. So yesterday I shared a great PhD scholarship from Cambridge University - for those who want to apply for it but have no idea how to start, this post is for you.In 2022, after 3 years of tons of rejected proposals, I finally landed not only 1, but 3 PhD scholarships. Like we say in Brazil, "os humilhados serao exaltados" (the meek shall be lifted up) :D. So immediately after receiving these offers (I was still in Turkey, getting ready to move to the UK), I decided to create a self-paced course to help prospective PhD students maximise their chances of getting a PhD scholarship. I wanted to share with other people my winning strategies. So I created: https://lnkd.in/d_h8ySuSIn it, you will find 6 highly practical modules:Module 1-How to find studentships Module 2-Gathering information and documentsModule 3 -Choosing the right potential supervisors and contacting them Module 4 -Writing a research proposal Module 5 -Writing a personal statement Module 6 -Preparing for the interview This course is aimed at people who want to pursue PhD scholarships within Social Sciences and Humanities only.If you have any questions, feel free to message/comment here.

Is there a difference between PhD scholar and PhD candidate? And do these terms reflect certain mindsets, attitudes, or self-perceptions? 🤔 In my opinion, the answer is “Yes”. Let's see how.The primary distinction between a PhD scholar and a PhD candidate is firstly:PhD Scholar:•Someone who is pursuing or planning to pursue a PhD degree.•They may be in the application process or just starting their program.•Typically refers to a student in the early stages of their PhD study.PhD Candidate:•A student who has completed their coursework, passed qualifying exams, and met other requirements to be admitted to candidacy.•They are officially working on and focused on their dissertation research.•This is usually the latter stage of a PhD program before dissertation defense.Secondly, do the terms reflect certain mindsets, attitudes, or self-perceptions?It's quite common and perfectly fine to consider yourself a PhD scholar even if you are in the later stages of your PhD program. Here are some reasons why this perspective makes sense:1. The term "scholar" emphasizes the ongoing learning process. Even as a candidate focusing on your dissertation, you are still actively studying, researching, and expanding your knowledge.2. Using scholar reflects the mindset of always being a student, no matter how advanced you are in your field. It takes humility and reminds you that there is always more to learn.3. Scholar evokes the original meaning of PhD as "Doctor of Philosophy" - someone devoted to the love of knowledge, not just credentialing.4. As a candidate there is pressure associated with your dissertation and finalizing your PhD. Scholar has a more positive connotation.5. You may not feel ready or worthy of being called a candidate if you haven't passed certain milestones yet. Scholar doesn't have that implication.6. Scholar is inclusive of the entire journey - coursework, exams, research, dissertation. Candidate refers just to the end stage. In the end, it's about how you self-identify as a lifelong learner. If you resonate more with the term scholar, there is certainly nothing wrong with using it throughout your PhD program. How you describe yourself should reflect your values and perspective. What is your opinion on this 😊 ?
