How do you raise a 4 day old chick? ›

If using with Sav-A-Chick ^® Probiotic, mix one packet of each product into the same gallon of water. Offer the mixed solution AND plain drinking water (in a separate container) at all times during hot weather or other stress. Important: Make fresh solution daily. Manufacture date - best if used within 24 months.

Because newly-hatched chicks have recently absorbed the egg yolk, they do not need to eat or drink for at least 24 hours. If you are incubating eggs, the chicks should stay in the incubator until they are completely dry. Once the chicks are moved to the brooder, you should provide feed and water.

FOOD For lethargic chicks, try feeding them raw egg yolk. This will provide the nutrients they need to begin eating on their own. If you feel your entire new flock could benefit from a boost, provide warm scrambled eggs or plain yogurt.

Cold boiled water is the most recommended. You can add 5% glucose and multivitamins in the water. Then start feeding, the feed can be placed in the trough or tray. The food should be high-protein, and the crude protein content should not be less than 19.5%.

Never buy just one chick to raise. Even if you have a flock for the chick to join when it is grown, you should always raise at least 2 chicks together. Sometime if a hatch is poor, you can end up with just one chick. A single chick being raised by a mother hen is fine, but a single chick in a brooder is not ok.

Once chicks arrive, introduce them to the brooding area. Water, at room temperature, should be available, but wait a couple hours to introduce feed. This gives chicks a couple hours to drink and rehydrate before they start eating, fresh, quality water is essential for healthy chicks.

It's important to give your chicks time to adjust to their new home, especially for their first few days. Don't pick them up for the first day or two. Instead, sit near the brooder and talk to them in a soft voice so that they can get used to your presence.
