Het blijft voor mij een raadsel waarom ik de naam John Hiatt zelden tegenkom in het rijtje van gelouterde singer-songwriters als Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen en Tom Petty. Deze heren zijn geweldig goed maar John Hiatt doet niet voor hen onder. In de 50 jaar dat John actief is, heeft hij zoveel prachtige nummers geschreven. Andere artiesten waren vaak succesvol met hits van de hand van Hiatt.
Ik dacht eraan om even een blog te schrijven over de 10 beste nummers van John Hiatt. Dat is lastiger dan gedacht. Deze Amerikaanse singer songwriter heeft zoveel mooie songs geschreven en gezongen dat het onbegonnen werk is zijn beste 10 nummers te selecteren. Een Top 30 of 50 met de beste nummers van John Hiatt zou gemakkelijker zijn. Desondanks hou ik het bij 10 nummers die mij het meest aanspreken.
In de liedjes van Hiatt is het knokken voor geluk. Vaak terugkerende thema´s zijn de zelfkant, familiegeluk, vastgelopen levens en liefdes.

1. Perfectly Good Guitar
Perfectly Good Guitar is een nummer afkomstig van zijn gelijknamige elfde album. Hiatt rockt er goed op los. Het nummer heeft een pakkend refrein en een directe tekst.
‘It breaks my heart to see those stars smashing a perfectly good guitar’, zingt Hiatt als klacht naar Pete Townsend (van The Who) en de gitaristen uit het grungetijdperk die hun gitaren regelmatig stuk sloegen.
De kapotte gitaren zijn ook een metafoor voor verbroken relaties.
2. Damn This Town
De gitaarriff op Damn This Town doet denken aan het eerder besproken nummer Perfectly Good Guitar. Op dit rockende openingsnummer van het album Dirty Jeans and Mudslide Hymns zingt John: ‘They killed my brother in a poker game, damn this town I’m leaving.’ Er ontvouwt zich een familietragedie vol drank, geweld en moord.
3. Riding With The King
Een ander nummer dat ligt in lijn ligt van deze twee nummers is Riding With The King. Het nummer vertelt het verhaal van een droom, waarin de spreker succes en rijkdom voor zich ziet, maar uiteindelijk alles verkwist. Zoals vaker met John Hiatt nummers hebben anderen er wel succes mee en hij niet. B.B. King en Eric Clapton namen het nummer op en hadden er een hit mee.
4. Thing Called Love
Thing Called Love is een leuk en flirterig rocknummer van het album Bring The Family. Bonnie Raitt coverde de song in 1989 overtuigend alsof het nummer altijd al van haar was. Gedurende de jaren hebben John en Bonnie het nummer samen uitgevoerd, zoals tijdens hun gedenkwaardige optreden op Farm Aid in 2012.
5. She Loves The Jerk
Een catchy nummer op het album Riding With The King. Als single uitgebracht maar weinig airplay. She Loves The Jerk heeft een eenvoudige video met een neerslachtige Hiatt die op de vloer van zijn videoshoot heen en weer loopt en lijdt onder een meisje dat met de verkeerde man is getrouwd.

6. Slow Turning
De titelsong van zijn gelijknamige album is een vrolijk stampnummer. Het werd opgenomen met de begeleidingsband The Goners met slide gitarist Sonny Landreth. Slow Turning was te horen in de sportfilm The Rookie.
7. Have A Little Faith In Me
Het bekendste nummer van John Hiatt dat regelmatig te horen is. Het was het eerste nummer dat Hiatt maakte nadat hij zijn verslavingen aan drank en drugs had bedwongen. Aanvankelijk had het nummer een grotere instrumentale begeleiding met drums. Bij het opnemen van Have A Little Faith In Me in de studio ging er van alles fout. De dag erna hoorde Hiatt dat zijn eerste vrouw zelfmoord had gepleegd op die bewuste avond. Later besloot John zijn zang alleen te begeleiden met piano.
8. Lipstick Sunset
Net als Have A Little Faith In Me staat het fraaie en meeslepende nummer Lipstick Sunset op zijn beste album Bring The Family. Een zomers nummer dat zoals veel van zijn liedjes gaat over hartzeer en verloren liefde. De wonderlijke magie van een zonsondergang in lippenstiftkleur, waarbij Ry Cooder de show steelt met zijn adembenemende gitaarspel.
9. Adios to California
Verhuizen van Californie naar Nashville is een pad dat veel Americana artiesten bewandelen. Bij Hiatt gebeurde dat na de zelfmoord van zijn eerste vrouw. De emotionele lading van het nummer komt tot uiting in de regels ´Two cigarettes from the package gone, you must have thought it just that long.´
10. Feels Like Rain
In de ballad Feels Like Rain vergelijkt Hiatt een nieuwe liefde met de kracht van een orkaan. Het nummer staat op het Slow Turning album uit 1988. Buddy Guy coverde het nummer op zijn gelijknamige album.

It remains a mystery why I rarely come across the name John Hiatt in the list of revered singer-songwriters like Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen and Tom Petty. These gentlemen are incredibly talented, but John Hiatt is no less. During his 50 years of activity, he has written many beautiful songs. Other artists have often found success with hits written by Hiatt.
I thought about writing a blog about John Hiatt’s 10 best songs. That turned out to be more difficult than expected. This American singer-songwriter has written and sung so many beautiful songs that selecting his best 10 songs seems an impossible task. A Top 30 or 50 with the best songs of John Hiatt would be easier. Nevertheless, I’ll stick to 10 songs that resonate the most.
In Hiatt’s songs, it’s a struggle for happiness. Often recurring themes include the underbelly of society, family happiness, stalled lives, and love.

Perfectly Good Guitar
Perfectly Good Guitar is a song from his eponymous eleventh album. Hiatt rocks out well on it. The song has a catchy chorus and direct lyrics. “It breaks my heart to see those stars smashing a perfectly good guitar,” Hiatt sings as a complaint to Pete Townsend (of The Who) and the guitarists from the grunge era who regularly smashed their guitars. The broken guitars are also a metaphor for broken relationships.
Damn This Town
The guitar riff on Damn This Town is reminiscent of the previously mentioned song Perfectly Good Guitar. On this rocking opening track from the album Dirty Jeans and Mudslide Hymns, John sings, ´They killed my brother in a poker game, damn this town I’m leaving.´ A family tragedy unfolds full of drink, violence, and murder.
Riding With The King
Another song that aligns with these two songs is Riding With The King. The song tells the story of a dream in which the speaker sees success and wealth ahead, but ultimately squanders everything. As often happens with John Hiatt songs, others have had success with them while he has not. B.B. King and Eric Clapton recorded the song and had a hit with it.
Thing Called Love

John Hiatt’s most famous song that is regularly heard. It was the first song Hiatt made after conquering his addictions to alcohol and drugs. Initially, the song had a larger instrumental accompaniment with drums. Many things went wrong when recording Have A Little Faith In Me in the studio. The day after, Hiatt learned that his first wife had committed suicide that very evening. Later, John decided to accompany his singing only with piano.
Lipstick Sunset
Like Have A Little Faith In Me, the beautiful and captivating song Lipstick Sunset is on his best album Bring The Family. A summer song that, like many of his songs, is about heartache and lost love. The wonderful magic of a sunset in lipstick color, with Ry Cooder stealing the show with his breathtaking guitar playing.
